I first learned from HP that a 64bit printer driver for the 7660 was unavailable but that the driver for the HP deskjet 5600 was a compatible alternative and was also available on my new Windows 7 64bit OS. I now have access from my new laptop running Windows 7 64bit via our wireless local area network to my HP photosmart 7660 printer connected via cable to the host Dell desktop running Windows XP SP3 32bit. I need the procedure for installing this Deskjet 5600 printer-driver for my network printer. HP also gave me a step-by-step procedure for installing this driver but it only covers the installation of a local USB printer and not a network Then attempted to download that driver I was given a msg stating that this driver was already on my Windows 7 system. When I could not locate the printer-file on the Windows 7 system, I went on-line to the HP website and found that they did not have a Windows 7 64-bit driver for the PhotoSmart 7660 but that the Deskjet 5600 driver was a compatible alternate. Laptop to the Photosmart 7660 via the wireless network using the "Add Devices and Printers" option, the system could not locate an appropriate printer-driver on Windows Update, and then gave the error msg, "the file INF is needed.
The desktop and several laptops all running Windows XP have successfully connected to the network printer for several years. The DSL modem is wired to router and router to desktop. I have a small wireless home network setup with the following components: Desktop running on Windows XP, DSL modem, Belkin router, and HP Photosmartħ660 printer wired to desktop via USB. Similar to the Q by Beatr79, I have also just purchased a new Dell Inspiron 17R laptop running Windows 7 64-bit.
